Havening is a neuroscience-based approach that supports mental health by reshaping neural pathways associated with emotional distress. It also enhances overall wellbeing, reduces stress, improves performance in professional, academic, and physical settings, and strengthens emotional resilience.
Havening is designed to support the brain in de-traumatizing distressing memories and reducing their negative impact on both the mind and body. Using a combination of gentle touch, distraction, and eye movements, the technique can bring relief within minutes. Havening sessions are equally effective when delivered online or in person.
The Havening Techniques®, also known as Delta Wave Techniques or Amygdala Depotentiation Therapy, are a research-informed psychosensory approach for anxiety-based conditions and difficulties arising from traumatic stress. Developed by Dr Ronald Ruden, MD, PhD, this neuroscience- and neurobiology-based method represents a significant advancement in the rapid and effective treatment of stress-related psychological and physical symptoms.
When an experience is perceived as traumatic or highly stressful, it can become encoded in both the brain and body, creating triggers that may persist long after the event has passed. Havening works by applying gentle touch and sensory distraction to modify the brain’s response to these memories, supporting changes in thoughts, emotional states, and behaviour. The electrochemical processes activated during Havening influence how traumatic memories are stored and recalled.
The aim of Havening is to help re-process distressing experiences so they no longer elicit a strong negative emotional response. In doing so, it supports emotional regulation, builds resilience, and enhances overall wellbeing.
Havening may be beneficial for individuals experiencing anxiety, chronic stress, worry, anger or emotional reactivity, traumatic experiences or PTSD, grief and loss, recurring fears, or entrenched emotional patterns.
Originally referred to as the Amygdala Depotentiation Technique, Havening Techniques® help reduce and, in some cases, reverse the long-term psychological and physiological impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences and other forms of trauma.
Havening works to lower the body’s overall stress load, which can support immune functioning and enhance the body’s ability to heal. In doing so, it helps address the stress-related aspects of physical illness and reduces the effects of ongoing negative stress.
By reducing emotional reactivity while expanding an individual’s capacity to respond and adapt to challenge and change, Havening helps cultivate regular access to positive emotional states such as calm, curiosity, ease, joy, enthusiasm, gratitude, kindness, love, and delight. As these states are experienced more frequently, the brain’s neurochemical environment becomes increasingly resilient.
Havening can significantly reduce, and in some cases eliminate, distressing emotional responses—often within minutes. This makes it especially valuable for individuals experiencing high levels of distress, as it can provide rapid relief from present-moment discomfort.
Havening supports the removal of internal blocks that can hinder progress, helping reduce procrastination while enhancing clarity, focus, and motivation to achieve personal or professional goals.
By addressing the emotional origins of chronic pain and supporting the healing of emotional and psychological effects of trauma.
